For instance when somebody asks you a question, and the answer is actually really interesting and intricate and you know you could go on explaining it, but you sense they’ve suddenly realized they made a mistake asking?

So I’ve been told many times by several friends. Don’t worry, there’s a little James May in all of us

Everytime my gf asks me something car related! But that’s ok, I enjoy explaining car stuff anyway.

Yes. Unless I ask my brother something, then I feel like JC after asking the question.

I hear that regularly. It’s usually coming from my wife. The only time it irks me is when she warns the kids, “do you want to hear another of your dad’s lectures?” Hey! Kids are supposed to suffer through the long explanation of everything! It’s part of the reason my kids are so well informed.

I know far too many fellow engineers that refuse to explain anything in fewer than 100 words. I mean sure, the lengthy explanation is interesting to me but “normal” folk definitely dont appreciate it. I find that a key point of “good quality” engineering is being able to explain really complicated ideas in simple ways that anyone can understand. It shows you truly understand a concept if you can effectively simplify it.

yeah the other day one of the guys at work was talking about putting together a “fun” truck. they made the mistake of asking me what i would do.......... i started out by asking WHAT EXACTLY he needed the truck to do, and what kind of transmission, what kind of driving, top speed. and i kept getting the “all those things” answer.......... so then i tried to explain about building an engine to work in a specific powerband, in a specific gear.........
about that time his eyes glazed over, and his eyes started rolling back in his skull......... so i left him with “just figure out what it NEEDS to do”..............
